What is a cookie wall?

A cookie wall blocks access to a website until the visitor accepts cookies. EU regulators have largely rejected them: consent that is forced is not freely given, so most cookie walls fail the GDPR's validity test even though they technically ask.

Why regulators object

Valid consent must be freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous. When the only way to read an article is to accept tracking, the choice is not free. The Dutch, French, and other authorities have said so explicitly.

The accepted alternative

A standard banner with a real reject option, where content remains accessible after refusal, is the compliant pattern. Some subscription-funded sites use a consent-or-pay model, which regulators are still evaluating but treat very differently from a plain wall.
